The Clown Film

Trailler

…heartfelt and generous in spirit…
…beautifully shot, lighthearted and nostalgic…

Synopsis

Foto Pangaré e Puro Sangue

"This charming, light-hearted dramedy, cowritten and directed by lead actor Mello, explores identity and the road to self-acceptance.

The Circo Esperança (Circus Hope) roams the valleys and mountains of southwestern Brazil. Among its hodgepodge of misfits are the father/son clown duo of Pangaré (Mangy Horse) and Puro Sangue (Thoroughbred), who make a living making people laugh. In one pivotal scene, Pangaré asks, “I make people laugh, but who will make me laugh?” His father responds, “In life we have to do what we know how to do.”

By capturing the seemingly insignificant moments that make up life in a family or small community, Mello evokes a special time and space and makes it intimately recognizable—even if you've never been part of an exotic circus."

“It is a simple movie because it's about the gestures of life, and this is where you find the human complexity.”

“Fleeting details are liberally peppered throughout Mello’s magical film—a movie of inexhaustible visual inventiveness, gloriously precise comic timing, and dryly droll set-ups…”

“What do those who make people laugh for a living think is funny? Benjamin, a clown traveling with the Circus Esperanza, tackles this question and more when he decides to leave the circus he grew up in and pursue his own dreams. With only a copy of his birth certificate in hand, Benjamin looks for answers, and for his identity, away from the bright lights of the big top.”

“’The Clown’ is perhaps the funniest film this reviewer has seen at the Chicago International Film Festival so far this year. Its humor is blunt and direct, and unlike the subject matter, is not based on slapstick."

Brandon Gaylor, Examiner.com

“The Clown manages to be lighthearted even when its lead character is despondent. There’s some slapstick in the circus scenes, but as soon as the characters walk out of the big top the humor switches to deadpan; there are plenty of hilariously awkward moments when Benjamin (with or without his fellow performers) is misunderstood, mocked and exploited by the outside world."
